OT Training 5.21.14

Today was my medium day for my bike and swim workouts and while I have done there a little staggered through the day I went back-to-back from bike to swimming today. It worked out pretty well as my bike was a lot better than I thought it was going to be and my swim was pretty good. I was able to push through some tiredness and increase my swimming over 150 yards from Monday which is about what I expected to do.

I was tapped for a 64 minute bike ride today and I wanted to get a little hill work in today to see how my legs responded and it was better than expected. I took nearly the same route as I did to start my ride on Monday and instead of heading back to my starting point I headed into town (Freeport) and down to the trail to finish my ride. This was a little more downhill of a ride than I was anticipated but I finished 16.19 miles in 1:05:26 which was around the same milage I had for my long day last week only I finished it in about 10 less minutes.

I think some of that had to do with how downhill it was, but I was really strong on the hills that I did do and I was able to hold in some of my higher gears for much of my ride. Here is my speed/elevation map:

As you can see it was mostly downhill with some hills in there. It seems like I did more uphill work at the beginning but even though the graph doesn't show it I think I had some good work. I think this will push me more next week to try and get some tougher hill work in and see where I really am on my short and medium days.

My swimming workout came right up next. Took me about 15 minutes to get from the end of my bike ride to the pool so it gave my legs a little bit of a rest. I have only swam three times so far in the workout plan and things have been going pretty slow. I was pretty happy with my pool workout on Monday so I wanted to push it a little more today.

I have mostly been working 50 freestyles in my workouts but today I wanted to try and get some 100's in. I was able to start my workouts with two 100's. It was pretty difficult. I am still trying to get into a groove with my breathing and if I slip up a little on one of the legs of the work it can leave me catching up to try and get my breathing right.

Anyways, I wanted to try and get one more 100 in but I just didn't have it in my. I finish up my freestyle workouts with six more 50's. In between I would walk halfway down the pool and back as some recovery and then go right away. I was pretty spent after this but it gave me a really good base workout.

I think went with some kick board and pull work for my legs and arms. I alternated between doing kick board and doing pulls for two times each and finished out with one more pull (so I did two kick boards and three pulls) since I wanted to get a little bit more work with my arms. I finished the workout with another 50. I wanted to finish with two 50's but I was spent.

Overall that gave me 800 yards today after doing 650 on Monday I got all of this done in 25 minutes which was a little short of what I was supposed to do but I think in the pool it is more important to focus on distances than it is on time. This 800 included a couple of 100's so I think that is a pretty good step for me. Hopefully going to get in 1,000 on Friday for my long session.
